100 Christian Women Who Changed the 20th Century Hosier, Helen
Kooiman From Library Journal As befits a publication from Revell, these
biographical sketches have an evangelical slant. Hosier, a prolific author
of spiritual titles and biographies, admits that she had no specific
selection criteria, and the result is eclectic; entries range from Mother
Teresa to Marabel Morgan, Aimee Semple McPherson to Anita Bryant, Susan B.
Anthony to Kathy Lee Gifford. The sketches, which vary from fewer than 200
words to seven pages in length, emphasize the role of faith in each
woman's life and are organized into eight categories covering writing,
education, entertainment, literature, business and politics, mission work,
evangelism and ministry, and motherhood. A brief bibliography identifies
the sources used in compiling the entries. While the tone is one of praise
rather than objective analysis, this work makes a significant contribution
in identifying women who are frequently omitted from standard reference
texts. Recommended for large public libraries and women's studies
collections.DJan Blodgett, Davidson Coll. Lib., NC Copyright 2000 Reed

19 Gifts of the Spirit: Which Do You Have? Are You Using
Them? Flynn, Leslie B Book Description CHARISMATIC? YOU CERTAINLY
ARE...IF YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN AT ALL. But perhaps not in the way the term
is frequently used today. Charismata is a Greek word meaning "gifts of
grace." It refers to the gifts or special abilities given to Christians by
the Holy Spirit--all the gifts, not just speaking in tongues or miracles
or healing. and #149; What are the 19 gifts? and #149; Are they all for
today? and #149; What is their purpose? and #149; How can we discover and
put to use our own gifts? All of these questions, plus a careful
examination of gifts revealed in the Bible, are included in this in-depth
study, first published in 1974. If you want to know what the Bible says
about spiritual gifts, this book is for you. Dr. Leslie Flynn is the
former pastor of Grace Conservative Baptist Church in Nanuet, New York,
where he served for 40 years. He has written more than 30 books, among
them this classic and The Twelve. --This text refers to the Paperback

Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths Feiler,
Bruce At a time when conflicts among three of the world's
major religions--Islam, Judaism, and Christianity--are in the global
spotlight, Bruce Feiler offers a stunning biography of the one man who
unites all three religions: Abraham. "The most mesmerizing story of
Abraham's life--his offering a son to God--plays a pivotal role in the
holiest week of the Christian year, at Easter," writes Feiler. "The story
is recited at the start of the holiest fortnight in Judaism, on Rosh
Hashanah. The episode inspires the holiest day in Islam, 'Id al-Adha,' the
Feast of the Sacrifice, at the climax of the Pilgrimage. And yet the
religions can't even agree on which son he tried to kill." Herein lies the
irony and perfection of Feiler's timing. As we struggle to find a path to
peace among these three religions, all warring in Jerusalem, near the
stone where Abraham brought his son for sacrifice, this captivating
biography speaks to Abraham as the metaphor he is: the historically
elusive man who embodies three religions, a character who has
shape-shifted over the millennia to serve the clashing goals and dogma of
each religion. Anyone seeking to understand the roots of tension in the
Middle East need look no further than the final half of this book, where
Feiler interprets the meaning of Abraham as seen through the prism of each
religion. Surprisingly, the book is as entertaining as it is thoughtful:
Feiler is a masterful writer with a warm, humorous voice, a dazzling way
with metaphors, and an underlying intelligence that comes through in every
passage. Abraham deserves the highest of recommendations. --Gail Hudson
--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Publishers Weekly
Feiler, who penned last year's bestseller Walking the Bible, once again
offers a winning combination of history, travel and spiritual memoir.
Arguing that Abraham, the purported "father" of Judaism, Christianity and
Islam, "holds the breadth of the past and perhaps the dimensions of the
future in his life story," Feiler sets out to recover Abraham as he is
portrayed in all three religions. The book's first half addresses what the
Bible and Koran say about Abraham, his call to monotheism, and his sons
Isaac and Ishmael. Particularly fascinating are Feiler's discussions of
how the three religious traditions invented stories about Abraham to
supplement the rather skeletal canonical version and even borrowed these
stories from one another, as when Muslim traditions about Abraham and
Ishmael began appearing in eighth-century Jewish commentaries. The second
half very poignantly delves into each faith tradition and discusses how
the Abraham narratives relate to contemporary religious and political
conflicts. No one writes description quite like Feiler. His claim, for
example, that "the Holy Sepulcher is to a church what Picasso is to a
portrait a cubist vision of fractured beauty" is an arresting and
perfectly imagined analogy, and he mellifluously depicts the Arabic
language as "flowing, evolved, [and] sculpted, like a dune." More
important than Feiler's masterful wordsmithing is his passionate
engagement of the subject matter. Italics are everywhere, yet they don't
feel overused; Feiler has a keen sense of what is at stake when these
three religions claim Abraham as their father. This is a joy to read.

America's God: From Jonathan Edwards to Abraham Lincoln Noll, Mark
A. From Publishers Weekly This "social history of theology" in America,
from the colonial era through the Civil War, promises to reshape the way
we think about American religion, and, indeed, American history. Noll, who
teaches history at evangelicalism's premier liberal arts college, Wheaton,
charts the changes and developments in American theology, but he does not
approach this potentially technical and narrow topic from the fusty
perspective of old-fashioned intellectual history. Rather, he embeds
theology in American society, showing how, inter alia, printing presses,
legislatures and war shaped, and were shaped by, theology. His
gauntlet-throwing argument is that American theology (by which he means
primarily Protestant theology) is markedly different from European
theology. A specifically American evangelicalism, he contends, was forged
during the Revolution and early Republic. Noll's story ends with the Civil
War, which he claims reveals a "theological tragedy": the contradictions
and complications of this distinctly American religion were exposed when,
in war, the American project proved wanting. Noll's hints of the
"post-Protestant, even post-Christian" post-bellum America will leave
readers hoping for a sequel. Although this magnum opus will be of interest
primarily to scholars, it could certainly be appreciated by a larger
audience. Noll's trademark clarity-both in analysis and in prose-is in
evidence here; unlike many academics, he does not make the reader hunt and
strain to find (and follow) his argument. Equally obvious is Noll's
erudite mastery of everything from Puritan ecclesiology to Scottish moral
philosophy. This is, finally, the magisterial work that has long been
expected from one of our leading historians. Copyright 2002 Reed Business
Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From
Library Journal Noll (Christian thought, Wheaton Coll.) is a
well-recognized historian and author of American religious history. Here,
he closely examines pre-Civil War American religion, showing that it was a
unique synthesis of republicanism, commonsense moral reasoning, and
evangelical Christianity. The antebellum United States was a society
uniquely preoccupied with biblical religion, but American religion also
reflected the prevailing sentiments and political preoccupations of
secular society. Noll brings to light some lesser-known theological
thinkers while also reexamining the more famous figures of the time,
including Harriet Beecher Stowe, Thomas Jefferson, and Jonathan Edwards.
Carefully documented and including an excellent bibliography, this
insightful volume makes a useful contribution to the study of religion in
America. It is not aimed at the general public but is unusually readable
for such a scholarly book. Recommended for academic and large public
libraries. C. Robert Nixon, M.L.S., Lafayette, IN Copyright 2002 Reed

Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy Kraybill, Donald
B. From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. When a gunman killed five
Amish children and injured five others last fall in a Nickel Mines, Pa.,
schoolhouse, media attention rapidly turned from the tragic events to the
extraordinary forgiveness demonstrated by the Amish community. The
authors, who teach at small colleges with Anabaptist roots and have
published books on the Amish, were contacted repeatedly by the media after
the shootings to interpret this subculture. In response to the questions
why--and how--did they forgive? Kraybill and his colleagues present a
compelling study of Amish grace. After describing the heartbreaking attack
and its aftermath, the authors establish that forgiveness is embedded in
Amish society through five centuries of Anabaptist tradition, and grounded
in the firm belief that forgiveness is required by the New Testament. The
community's acts of forgiveness were not isolated decisions by saintly
individuals but hard-won countercultural practices supported by all
aspects of Amish life. Common objections to Amish forgiveness are
addressed in a chapter entitled, What About Shunning? The authors
carefully distinguish between forgiveness, pardon and reconciliation, as
well as analyzethe complexities of mainstream America's response and the
extent to which the Amish example can be applied elsewhere. This
intelligent, compassionate and hopeful book is a welcome addition to the
growing literature on forgiveness. (Sept. 21) Copyright © Reed Business
Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From
Booklist *Starred Review* The crime-shooting innocent schoolchildren in a
one-room schoolhouse-was shockingly vicious. More shocking, virtually
incredible, was where it happened, in the heart of Pennsylvania's Amish
country, commonly associated with bucolic tranquility, not gun violence.
This remarkable book explains, exceedingly well, Amish reaction to the
horrific Nickel Mines shootings. The outside world was gravely taken aback
by the Amish response of forgiveness. Some in the media criticized the
Amish as naive and hypocritical (didn't they shun members of their own
community?), but most simply couldn't understand the Amish concept of
forgiveness as unmerited gift. How could they forgive humanly embodied
evil? The authors, all authorities on Amish culture, emphasize that the
Amish response reflected the sect's heritage and deeply embedded faith.
They distinguish forgiveness from pardon and reconciliation. Forgiveness
relinquishes the right to vengeance, while pardon forfeits punishment
altogether, and reconciliation restores the relationship of victim and
offender or creates a new one. They discuss the shooting mercifully
straightforwardly before exploring the broader perspectives of forgiveness
and concluding with reflections on the meaning of forgiveness. At times
difficult to read, this anguished and devastating account of a national
tragedy and a hopeful, life-affirming lesson in how to live is itself a
marvel of grace. Sawyers, June

Angels: God's Secret Agents Graham, Billy Angels:
God's Secret Agents is Billy Graham's one-volume introduction to one of
the most popular spiritual phenomena of our time. Firmly grounded in
Graham's close readings of scripture, Angels testifies to Graham's own
encounters with the heavenly beings and also records the many similar
stories that other believers have told him over the years. Graham devotes
entire chapters to the questions of whether angels are visible or
invisible, how they differ from men and women, and how the angelic
hierarchy is organized. He also discusses the much-debated theory that UFO
sightings are in fact angelic appearances. Perhaps the primary purpose of
this book, however, is to inform readers that armies of angels are ready
and willing to help Christians in their daily fights against the forces of
darkness. "Millions of angels are at God's command and at our service,"
Graham writes. "The hosts of heaven stand at attention as we make our way
from earth to glory, and Satan's BB guns are no match for God's heavy
artillery." Such stirring theological pronouncements are matched with
practical advice for believers who wish to know the angelic powers in
everyday life. --Kevin Attwood --This text refers to the Paperback

to call a world in crisis to faith. --This text refers to the Audio

Apollyon: The Destroyer Is Unleashed Jenkins, Jerry
B. Apollyon: The Destroyer Is Unleashed, by Tim LaHaye and
Jerry B. Jenkins, is another suspenseful chronicle of those left behind
after the rapture of the saved. As the book opens, Hattie Durham, the
former airline attendant and mistress of the antichrist, Nicolae
Carpathia, is wracked with confusion about what to do with her
illegitimate child, whose birth date is coming due. Rayford Steele, the
airline pilot who flies Carpathia's plane, is ambivalent about the
mounting evidence that his late wife, Amanda, may have been a false
believer. Buck, the ace newspaper reporter, and Chloe, his wife, are
debating whether to have a child when the future of the world is so
uncertain. And all of the world's thousands of believers are gathering in
Jerusalem for a stadium rally, which will lead to a showdown with Nicolae
Carpathia. Believers are increasingly relying on the Internet for
underground communication, and most of them are becoming more and more
tempted by violence as a way of battling the forces of evil overtaking the
world. But demon locusts are shortly dispatched as a divine plague to
attack those who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads; this buys
the believers a little bit of time to solve their respective personal
crises, all of which end in ways that will keep you riveted until the last
page. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Book Description The #1
best-selling hardcover novel of 1999 is now available in softcover! The

Assassins: Assignment: Jerusalem, Target: Antichrist LaHaye, Tim
F. Is it right to kill Satan's hit man? Would it help God's
work? This installment in the Left Behind series picks up with Rayford
Steele--"believer" and international fugitive--as he struggles with a plan
to assassinate Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia. Meanwhile, Carpathia has been
busy rebuilding roads, airports, and a cellular/solar satellite phone
system--all designed to help him become supreme ruler of the world--and
even claim himself to be God. We also find ace reporter Buck Williams
anonymously preaching to the masses of believers and converts through his
cyberspace magazine The Truth. All the believers in the safe house,
including Buck, Doc, Chloe, and Tsion, are suspicious of Hattie--former
mistress of Carpathia--who claims to be a believer but may have already
compromised their secret location when she tried to buy her way to Europe
months before. Fans of the series won't be disappointed. Jenkins's
signature writing is at full force. Readers can count on a suspenseful
plot, imaginative futuristic thinking, and familiar characters, all of
which appear in the opening pages and are sustained until the last
cliffhanger scene when God unleashes another earth-shattering disaster.

Bad Girls of the Bible and What We Can Learn from Them Higgs, Liz
Curtis Jezebel and Delilah have plenty to teach contemporary
Christian women, according to Bad Girls of the Bible and What We Can Learn
from Them. In this self-help book, Liz Curtis Higgs tells fictionalized,
contemporary stories based on the lives of biblical characters including
Eve, Potiphar's Wife, and the Woman at the Well. In verse-by-verse
commentary, Higgs summarizes each life's lessons and provides a list of
questions for personal consideration or group discussion. The overall
message of each chapter is the same: "Good Girls and Bad Girls both need a
Savior. The goodness of your present life can't open the doors of heaven
for you. The badness of your past life can't keep you out either." In its
effort to turn readers' minds heavenward, Bad Girls draws a distinction
between fun and joy. Associated with "fleshly pleasures," fun "is
temporary at best; it's risky, even dangerous, at worst." Joy, on the
other hand, is found in God's "gift of grace." Perhaps the book's greatest
weakness is its inability to see that "fun," in many lives, is a holy and
necessary means of attaining "joy." --Michael Joseph Gross From Publishers
Weekly Humorist and popular storyteller Higgs (Help! I'm Laughing and I
Can't Get Up) takes a look at the vamps and tramps of the Bible, searching
for the lessons these wicked women have to teach. She acknowledges that as
much as she admires Sarah's faithfulness and Mary's innocence, she finds
that her own life contains many of the shortcomings of women such as
Rahab, Delilah and Lot's wife. When Higgs begins her study of Jezebel, she
notes, "I understood her pushy personality, I empathized with her need for
control, I tuned into her angry outbursts...but boy did she teach me what
not to do in my marriage." She places the ten women in her study into four
categories. Eve, she says, was the "First Bad Girl," for badness has to
begin somewhere. Potiphar's wife (who tried to seduce Joseph), Delilah and
Jezebel, Higgs says, were "Bad to the Bone": these women "sinned with
gusto from bad beginning to bitter end." Women who were "Bad for a
Moment," and who have forever been characterized by their "life-changing"
mistakes, include Saphhira, Michal and Lot's wife (who was turned into a
pillar of salt for looking back on her homeland against God's commands).
Higgs says that Rahab, the prostitute who helped the Israelites conquer
Jericho, the Woman at the Well and the Sinful Woman were "Bad for a
Season, but Not Forever": these women "had plenty of sin in their past,
but they were also willing to change and be changed." Higgs opens each
chapter with a fictional retelling of the biblical story and then proceeds
to a verse-by-verse exegesis and commentary on the biblical text. Each
chapter closes with four lessons to be learned from the life of the bad
girl and eight "thoughts worth considering." Higgs retells these biblical
stories with rollicking humor and deep insight as she teaches about the
nature of sin and goodness. (Aug.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business

Beauty For Ashes: Receiving Emotional Healing Meyer,
Joyce Product Description Bestselling author Joyce Meyer explores the
true path to emotional healing through God's love. Many people seem to
have it all together outwardly, but inside they are falling apart, crushed
and wounded by their past. But God has a plan to heal the broken-hearted
and the victims of abuse. For over 30 years, Joyce Meyersuffered the
devastating effects of verbal, sexual, and physical abuse. Today, she has
a worldwide ministry of emotional healing for others like herself. In
BEAUTY FOR ASHES, she outlines the major truths that brought healing to
her life and describes how other victims of abuse can also experience this
healing, including how to deal with the emotional pain of abuse, how to
understand your responsibility to God for overcoming abuse, why victims of
abuse often suffer from other addictive behaviors, how to grab hold of
God's unconditional love, and the importance of God's timing in working
through painful memories. By sharing her personal story, Joyce Meyer wants
to help others find inner peace through their belief in God. About the
Author JOYCE MEYER has been teaching the Word of God since 1976 and in
full-time ministry since 1980. Previously an associate pastor at Life
Christian Church in St. Louis, Missouri, she developed, coordinated, and
taught a weekly meeting known as "Life In The Word." After more than five
years, the Lord brought it to a conclusion, directing her to establish her
own ministry and call it "Life In The Word, Inc." Now, her Life In The
Word radio and television broadcasts are seen and heard by millions across
the United States and throughout the world. Joyce's teaching tapes are
enjoyed internationally, and she travels extensively conducting Life In
The Word conferences. Joyce and her husband, Dave, the business
administrator at Life In The Word, have been married for over 35 years.
They reside in St. Louis, Missouri, and are the parents of four children.
All four children are married and, along with their spouses, work with
Dave and Joyce in the ministry. Believing the call on her life is to
establish believers in God's Word, Joyce says, "Jesus died to set the
captives free, and far too many Christians have little or no victory in
their daily lives." Finding herself in the same situation many years ago
and having found freedom to live in victory through applying God's Word,
Joyce goes equipped to set captives free and to exchange ashes for beauty.
She believes that every person who walks in victory leads many others into
victory. Her life is transparent, and her teachings are practical and can
be applied in everyday life. Joyce has taught on emotional healing and
related subjects in meetings all over the country, helping multiplied
thousands. She has recorded more than 230 different audio-cassette albums
and over 75 videos. She has also authored 49 books to help the body of
Christ on various topics. --This text refers to an out of print or

Beyond Left and Right: Helping Christians Make Sense of American
Politics Black, Amy E. Product Description The 2008 U.S.
presidential election is already heating up, fueled by debates about
religion and politics, and dividing people of faith. Many Christians want
to engage in politics but feel underequipped and overwhelmed. Wheaton
College political scientist Amy E. Black believes Christians must become
politically educated, not stereotyped and polarized. Beyond Left and Right
offers a complete guide to the inner workings of American politics,
equipping readers to think intelligently and to actively engage politics
with their faith. Black is intentionally unbiased and avoids fleeting
hot-button issues, ensuring the staying power of Beyond Left and Right,
even after the election dust settles. Recommended for Christians and
students interested in faith and politics. From the Back Cover Who speaks
for God in politics? Many Christians want to be politically active but
feel underequipped and overwhelmed. Instead of drawing party lines,
political scientist and former congressional fellow Amy Black offers a
guide to the inner workings of American politics that encourages readers
to make informed, faith-based political decisions. Beyond Left and Right
addresses major questions such as: What does the Constitution really say
about church and state? Is the United States a Christian nation?
What's the difference between a theological conservative and a political
conservative? Can Christians honestly disagree politically?
Intentionally nonpartisan, Beyond Left and Right is a much-needed resource
for Christians who want to apply their faith to politics. "For Christian
believers who want to understand contemporary American politics, and for
those who wish to take part, there is no better place to begin than Beyond
Left and Right."--Mark A. Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History,
University of Notre Dame "Puzzled by politics? This clear, easily
understood introduction by an expert on politics is what you
need."--Ronald J. Sider, president, Evangelicals for Social Action "The
challenge Amy offers each of us is to exhibit humble behavior in an
environment in which humility is a scarce commodity."--Pete Hoekstra, U.S.
Representative (R-MI) "Beyond Left and Right will be an inspiration and a
helpful guide to those seeking to relate their faith to the complexities
and challenges of politics."--David Price, U.S. Representative (D-NC)
"This call to temper political zealotry with love of God, neighbor, and
enemy will be of use to churches and academies alike."--Jason Byassee,

The BOOK OF VIRTUES Bennett, William J. From Library Journal
Believing with Plato that "tales which the young first hear should be
models of virtuous thought," former Secretary of Education Bennett ( The
De-Valuing of America , LJ 4/1/92) has produced a McGuffey's Reader for
the Nineties. The author draws upon a variety of literature ranging from
biblical stories to political legends and speeches to illustrate the
catalog of virtues--self-discipline, compassion, work, responsibility,
friendship, courage, perseverance, honesty, loyalty, faith--that he
believes are foundational to strong moral character. Most selections are
introduced by a short thematic note, e.g., "an honest heart will always
find friends." Bennett's elevation of these virtues to moral absolutes
renders the book's view of morality rather simplistic. In addition, the
collection's lack of attention to women's and non-Western voices
encourages the view that the experience of virtue belongs primarily to
Western males. Still, this anthology will prove popular with some readers.
Recommended for public libraries. - Henry L. Carrigan Jr., Westerville
P.L., Ohio Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text
refers to the Hardcover edition. From Booklist The principled former
secretary of education has culled a selection of poems and stories to be
read aloud in hopes of passing on specific virtues to the younger
generation. The selected works appear under chapter titles such as
"Compassion"; "Responsibility"; "Friendship"; "Courage"; "Perseverance";
and "Faith." As artificial or perhaps self-righteous as this project may
seem, it is effective. The old stories from the Bible, from great authors,
and from folklore do exert a charm and send a message that will stir
families to discuss or contemplate the issues set forth. It truly is a
treasury, with some tales so brief they can be read at the dinner table.
Perfect bedtime, anytime family reading. Denise Perry Donavin --This text

The Case For A Creator: A Journalist Investigates Scientific Evidence
That Points Toward God Strobel, Lee Are Christianity and
science incompatible? If there is a God, is he only an impersonal starter
force? An introductory high school biology class first propelled Lee
Strobel toward a life of atheism. God and science, he reasoned, were
mutually exclusive. When the former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune
converted to Christianity, he decided to investigate the science he had
once accepted as truth. Did science point toward or away from God? As
Strobel interviews a variety of scientists on everything from debunking
evolutionary icons to the implications of the Big Bang to the existence of
the human soul, he builds his case: scientific evidence points toward
Intelligent Design. Although the discussion often veers into the academic,
Strobel works hard to make it accessible to those without scientific
training. Throughout the book, he salts interview transcript information
with interesting personal stories of his own spiritual and scientific
quest for knowledge, as well as sometimes over-detailed descriptions of
the actual interviews (right down to the type of beverages consumed). Each
chapter contains suggestions for further reading on particular issues of
science and faith. Strobel concludes that, when correctly interpreted,
science and biblical teaching support each other. He quotes physicist Paul
Davies, "...science offers a surer path to God than religion." Open-minded
readers will find that this book, and its questions for reflection and
group study, invites conversation and investigation.--Cindy Crosby --This
text refers to the Paperback edition. From Publishers Weekly Strobel,
whose apologetics titles The Case for Christ and The Case for Faith have
enjoyed strong popularity among evangelicals, approaches
creation/evolution issues in the same simple and energetic style. The
format will be familiar to readers of previous Case books: Strobel visits
with scholars and researchers and works each interview into a topical
outline. Although Strobel does not interview any "hostile" witnesses, he
exposes readers to the work of some major origins researchers (including
Jonathan Wells, Stephen Meyer and Michael Behe) and theistic philosophers
(including William Lane Craig and J. P. Moreland). Strobel claims no
expertise in science or metaphysics, but as an interviewer he makes this
an asset, prodding his sources to translate jargon and provide
illustrations for their arguments. At times, the interview format loses
momentum as seams begin to show between interview recordings, rewrites,
research notes and details imported from his subjects' CVs (here,
Strobel's efforts at buffing his subjects' smart-guy credentials can
become a little too intense). The most curious feature of the book-not
uncommon in the origins literature but unusual in a work of Christian
apologetics-is that biblical narratives and images of creation, and the
significance of creation for Christian theology, receive such brief
mention. Still, this solid introduction to the most important topics in
origins debates is highly accessible and packs a good argumentative punch.

The Case for Christ : A Journalist's Personal Investigation of the
Evidence for Jesus Strobel, Lee The Case for Christ
records Lee Strobel's attempt to "determine if there's credible evidence
that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God." The book consists
primarily of interviews between Strobel (a former legal editor at the
Chicago Tribune) and biblical scholars such as Bruce Metzger. Each
interview is based on a simple question, concerning historical evidence
(for example, "Can the Biographies of Jesus Be Trusted?"), scientific
evidence, ("Does Archaeology Confirm or Contradict Jesus' Biographies?"),
and "psychiatric evidence" ("Was Jesus Crazy When He Claimed to Be the Son
of God?"). Together, these interviews compose a case brief defending
Jesus' divinity, and urging readers to reach a verdict of their own.

Jesus' divinity, and urging readers to reach a verdict of their own.
Publisher A Seasoned Journalist Chases Down the Biggest Story in History
The Project: Determine if there's credible evidence that Jesus of Nazareth
really is the Son of God. The Reporter: Lee Strobel, educated at Yale Law
School, award-winning former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune-with a
background of atheism. The Experts: A dozen scholars, with doctorates from
Cambridge, Princeton, Brandeis, and other top-flight institutions, who are
recognized authorities on Jesus. The Story: Retracing his own spiritual
journey, Strobel cross-examines the experts with tough, point-blank
questions: How reliable is the New Testament? Does evidence exist for
Jesus outside the Bible? Is there any reason to believe the resurrection
was an actual historical event? . . . This remarkable book reads like a
captivating, fast-paced novel. But it's not fiction. It's a riveting quest
for the truth about history's most compelling figure. What will your
verdict be in The Case for Christ

The Case for Civility: And Why Our Future Depends on It Guinness,
Os From Publishers Weekly Popular evangelical writer Guinness (The
Call) worries that the culture wars are destroying the United States. If
Americans don't find a way of living with our deepest differences, the
republic will decline. He forcefully defends religious liberty, noting
that it was crucial for the founding generation and should be just as
crucial today. To that end, he calls Christians to rethink their
enthusiasm for government-sponsored faith-based initiatives, and to
remember that evangelicals were the victims of earlier church-state
establishments. The religious right--whose discourse of victimization,
says Guinness, is silly and anti-Christian--comes under fire. Nor is
Guinness a fan of the nascent religious left--he prefers a depoliticized
faith. For all Guinness's rhetorical vim, his proposals ultimately feel
anodyne: his boilerplate conclusion is that in order to restore civility
we need leadership and a remarkable articulation of vision. Furthermore,
although Guinness notes that he is a European, the book is oddly marked by
the old rhetoric of American cultural imperialism. Echoing JFK, Guinness
wants his essay to be taken as one model for fostering civility around the
world and helping make the world safe for diversity. Many readers may
prefer Charles Marsh's lively, provocative manifesto Wayward Christian
Soldiers. (Feb.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed
Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Product Description In a world torn
apart by religious extremism on the one side and a strident secularism on
the other, no question is more urgent than how we live with our deepest
differences-especially our religious and ideological differences. The Case
for Civility is a proposal for restoring civility in America as a way to
foster civility around the world. Influential Christian writer and speaker
Os Guinness makes a passionate plea to put an end to the polarization of
American politics and culture that-rather than creating a public space for
real debate-threatens to reverse the very principles our founders set into
motion and that have long preserved liberty, diversity, and unity in this
country. Guinness takes on the contemporary threat of the excesses of the
Religious Right and the secular Left, arguing that we must find a middle
ground between privileging one religion over another and attempting to
make all public expression of faith illegal. If we do not do this,
Guinness contends, Western civilization as we know it will die. Always
provocative and deeply insightful, Guinness puts forth a vision of a new,
practical "civil and cosmopolitan public square" that speaks not only to
America's immediate concerns but to the long-term interests of the
republic and the world.

Case for Faith Strobel, Lee From Barnes & Noble The
bestselling author of The Case for Christ takes an unflinching look at the
toughest questions and most troubling doubts a believer might have. He
discusses topics like the presence of evil, the challenge of science, the
hypocrisy of the church, and the place of hell. By examining these issues
without fear or trembling, Strobel ultimately provides an airtight case.
From the Publisher In his #1 best-seller The Case for Christ, legally
trained investigative reporter Lee Strobel examined the claims of Christ,
reaching the hard-won verdict that Jesus is God's unique son. But despite
the compelling historical evidence that Strobel presented, many people
grapple with serious concerns about faith in God. As in a court of law,
they want to shout, "Objection!" They say, "If God is love, then what
about all the suffering in our world?" Or, "If Jesus is the door to
heaven, then what about the millions who have never heard of him?" Or, "If
God cares for everyone, then why does he eternally torture some in hell?"
In The Case for Faith, Strobel turns his tenacious investigative skills to
the most persistent emotional objections to belief-the eight "heart"
barriers to faith. The Case for Faith is for those who may be feeling
attracted toward Jesus, but who are faced with formidable intellectual
barriers standing squarely in their path. For Christians, it will deepen
their convictions and give them fresh confidence in discussing
Christianity with even their most skeptical friends. What People Are
Saying Phillip E. Johnson Lee Strobel asks the questions a tough-minded
skeptic would ask. Every inquirer should have it. - (Phillip E. Johnson,
law professor, University of California at Berkeley) Gerald L. Sittser Lee
Strobel has given believers and skeptics alike a gift in this book. He
does not avoid asking the most difficult questions imaginable, and refuses
to provide simplistic answers that do more harm than good. Yet his style
of writing makes the book surprisingly accessible and winsome. I found it
both helpful and captivating. - (Gerald L. Sittser, professor of religion,
Whitworth College, and author of A Grace Disguised and The Will of God as
a Way of Life) Synopsis This eagerly anticipated sequel to Lee Strobel's
best-selling book finds the author investigating the nettlesome issues and
doubts of the heart that threaten anyone's faith, even if he or she
believes the evidences of Strobel's first book, The Case for Christ.
Biography Lee Strobel (LeeStrobel.com), with a journalism degree from the
University of Missouri and a Master of Studies in Law degree from Yale Law
School, was the award-winning legal editor of the Chicago Tribune and a
spiritual skeptic until 1981. His books include four Gold Medallion
winners and the 2005 Christian Book of the Year (coauthored with Garry
Poole). He and his wife live in California. Lee Strobel, que se educó en
la Facultad de Derecho de Yale, fue el galardonado editor legal del
periódico Chicago Tribune y también fue un escéptico espiritual hasta

Chicken Soup for the Soul of America: Stories to Heal the Heart of Our
Nation Canfield, Jack (Editor) Book Description Most American heroes
aren't in our history books, nor do they have monuments erected in their
honor. Their names aren't in the headline news or memorialized in song.
The true hero is simply someone who makes a difference-large or small-in
the lives of others. They battle disease, crime, poverty and human rights
violations. They clean up environments, mentor neglected children and
truly care about others. Most importantly, anyone can be a hero in the
eyes of another. In Chicken Soup for the Soul of America, everyday heroes
are celebrated. Heroes have always been in our midst, but the recent
terrorist attacks on American soil have revealed many more heroes who have
given their lives, love, time and strength to those in great need. In the
aftermath of the September 11, 2001 events, Americans have found courage
and inspiration from so many heroes, and this book pays tribute to them
all, as well as those who appear every day in our lives. At a time when so
many are in pain, these unique stories will touch readers with love and
wisdom, the cornerstones of the American people and the hallmark of the
well-loved Chicken Soup series. From the Back Cover The citizens of this
country, as well as our friends around the world, truly do stand united.
Heroism has been redefined, our core values have resurfaced and a new
sense of local and national community has emerged. You won't find most
American heroes walking through the pages of history books or atop huge
monuments. Their names don't generally make the headlines or the 6 o'clock
news. A true hero is simply someone who makes a differencelarge or smallin
the lives of others. On September 11, 2001 our nation suffered the tragic
loss of thousands of lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center and
the Pentagon. Immediately, policemen, firefighters and other emergency
workers in New York and Washington, DC along with thousands of other
Americans responded with an outpouring of courage, selfless service and
faith. The overwhelming and passionate stories in Chicken Soup for the
Soul of America honor and celebrate the men, women and children who
stepped forward in this great time of need and, through their actions,
exemplified the true nature of the American Spirit! Celebrate The Soul of
America with your loved ones... with hope and determinationnow and for the
future!
